Mr Jiansan Jia is a Chinese national and holds a M.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquaculture. He worked for the government of China in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries for more than 20 years and held a number of important leading positions before joining FAO in 1998. And since then, he dedicated all his efforts in promoting sustainable development and management of fisheries and aquaculture at global and regional levels.

He was the Chief of the FAO Aquaculture Service for 15 years and supervised FAO’s aquaculture programme to promote the aquaculture sector at national, regional and global levels through capacity building and normative work. Among others, he played a leading role in establishing the COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and providing FAO’s assistance to developing countries and promoting regional aquaculture networks and South-South cooperation. He was the leading person in organizing the two previous FAO/NACA Global Aquaculture Conferences convened in 2000 and 2010, respectively. He was appointed the Deputy Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of FAO in 2012 and retired in March 2017. Mr Jia has been continuously active through serving as a visiting professor in Shanghai Ocean University in China, and special advisor to NACA and other regional fisheries bodies.
